Our history

Revolving Doors was established in 1993 following the publication of a report funded by ITV’s Telethon which first identified a group of people caught in a damaging cycle between homelessness, the criminal justice and the mental health systems. Since then we have changed and adapted what we do but always with a single goal of improving the lives of our target group.

In the early years we gathered evidence in police stations and prisons clarifying the needs of this group and the issues they faced. In the late 1990s we established a series of experimental services – the Link Worker Schemes – to test effective interventions. These won many accolades and were recognised as good practice in a number of government policy statements.

However, by 2006 it was clear that current commissioning arrangements and national policy stand in the way of the replication we had hoped to see and that further progress would require system reform. Consequently we passed our Link Worker schemes over to other voluntary sector providers to allow us to focus on this change.

Today we operate with a small central team based in London and a network of associates who work for us across the country. Our work is organised around three interlinking areas which feed into and inform each other.
