Those in contact with the Criminal Justice System come predominantly from communities that are badly affected by health inequalities
For example, they present with higher levels of need with respect to mental health, substance misuse and blood-borne viruses.
Mortality rates among this group are up to four times higher for those on community sentences.
We have therefore been at the forefront of the debate and call for change, including the presentation of robust, lived experience-based evidence to inform commissioners’ decision making.
Our team is also supporting the Department of Health, the NHS, Police and Crime Commissioners and other services to re-evaluate the impact of poor health on our criminal justice system.
