Summary
The Criminal Justice Link Service is a Hafal project supporting women from Wales with mental health problems in English prisons.
This project is part of our National Development Programme.
Project type: Service delivery
Project status: Active
Project aim
To provide an effective post prison support service for women from Wales with mental health problems:
- to help their integration back into their local community, and
- to reduce their risk of re-offending.
Project Outline
There is no women’s prison in Wales and so all female prisoners from Wales are incarcerated in England. This presents particular challenges with regards to resettlement.
This pilot is working with women from Wales with mental health problems in HMP Eastwood Park and HMP Styal. Project workers build relationships with the women in prison, identifying their unmet needs. They work with the women to broker access to services in their local areas which can address these needs on their return. Through-the-gate support enables referred women to access and engage with mainstream health and social care community services on release and hence assist their resettlement in to their local community. The Project Workers also replicate this process in the community for women who have slipped through the net or who come from prisons in other parts of the UK, with referrals from Community Mental Health Teams or Probation.
This project is funded by the Big Lottery.
