Custody planning for short sentenced women at HMP Styal

Region: North West

Location: HMP Styal, Cheshire

Summary

We are working with HMP Styal to improve custody planning for women serving short sentences.

This project is part of our National Development Programme.

Project type: System change/ service improvement

Project status: Active

Partners:

  • HMP Styal

Project aim

To improve health and social care outcomes during imprisonment and on release for the whole prison population, with a particular focus on those sentenced to short custodial sentences.

Project outline

In common with the wider women’s estate, HMP Styal incarcerates a large number of women with multiple problems, the majority of whom are serving short sentences. This complexity of need presents particular challenges to health and social care agencies who work with a high turnover of women, within such a limited timeframe. This project aims to work with the prison and health and social care agencies to develop a model to improve custody planning services in the prison.

Extensive consultation has taken place with staff working within HMP Styal and with a number of women prisoners. Additionally, time has been spent on Waite wing and on ordinary location observing staff and women and considering the challenges and constraints of the regime in relation to meeting the needs of women serving short sentences. As a result of this consultation a tool has been developed to aid sentence planning, the piloting of which is currently underway. The effectiveness of this intervention will be evaluated in March with a view to implementing it more widely thereafter.
