Project aim
To address the mental health needs of women offenders with alcohol problems in County Durham, in order to reduce their social exclusion.
Project outline
The project consists of two elements:
- A fast track community-based alcohol treatment service for women offenders with identified alcohol problems but who have not had the opportunity to access alcohol treatment services.
- A designated ‘aftercare’ service specifically for women offenders and ex-offenders with alcohol problems. The service focuses on confidence building and self esteem through training, peer mentoring and group work with the potential to pursue an associated accredited training and volunteering programme. The focus on confidence and self esteem are particularly relevant to the target group who typically have low level mental health problems that usually go unaddressed.
A support worker post is also part of the project. This worker works with women throughout their engagement with the programme to provide one-to-one support and help them maintain attendance.
The project is linked with, and partly integrated in to the Community Alcohol Service. The two parts of the project feed in to one another.
You-Turn is targeted at vulnerable women who are socially excluded and generally not in contact with services. Referrals are received from a range of sources including the police and the Community Alcohol Service.
