Transition to Adulthood - T2A

Revolving Doors Agency is part of the Transition to Adulthood (T2A) Alliance, a coalition of organisations and individuals working to improve the life chances of young people in their transition to adulthood who are at risk of falling in to the criminal justice system. See here for more details.
Our work with T2A has focused on young adults with multiple needs; 16-24 year olds who experience a number of vulnerabilities such as mental health problems, drug and/or alcohol misuse, homelessness, lack of legitimate income, contact with the criminal justice system and legal problems.
Often these may also be accompanied by experiences of early adversity such as abuse or neglect and many have spent time in care.
When these needs remain unmet, the interrelation between them often results in a cycle of crisis and crime.
We have developed two guides on working with young adults making the transition to adulthood. Click on the titles below or on the Related Documents tab to the right of this page to download them.
Aiming Higher is a good practice guide for practitioners working with young adults with multiple needs. It was compiled using the views of a team of young adults and professionals. The team visited fifteen services that work with young people aged 16-24, in order to gather information on how the services work, and what makes them effective.
Towards a Shared Future is a guide for commissioners, informed by policy analysis and interviews with those with responsibility for planning and delivering services.
The guides show how getting support right for young people at this crucial age can make a big difference, with better life chances for the young people themselves, and major savings for the public purse and the tax payer.
Tafari Franklyn-Brown, a young adult who took part in the Transition to Adulthood project, has written about the work in Guardian Public. Read the article here.
As part of our T2A work we have also completed two literature reviews looking at social and therapeutic interventions for 16 to 24 year olds. These are available to download from the Related Documents tab to the right of this page.
Some of the young people who have been involved in this work are now part of our Young People's Forum.
The project is supported by the Barrow Cadbury Trust.
